Southern Wildlife: Commerson's dolphin
They are common throughout the year, in the waters of San Sebastian Bay and the Magallanes Strait. Usually swim a short distance from the coast and is not unusual to it follows the path of the ships.
Seabirds: Wandering Albatros (Diomedea exulans)
Wandering and solitary habits, this albatross frequents the waters of the region. It is a large bird whose wingspan can reach 3 meters.
The muskrat
Just like the beaver, the population of muskrats (Ondatra zibethica, Cricetidae family) originated from a few specimens. 125 females and 75 males were imported from Canada and released in small groups at different points in the immediate vicinity of Fagnano lake.
Southern Wildlife: Sea Lion
They have a pronounced sexual dimorphism. The males have the neck and head covered with a long coat or "mane" which has earned the species the name "Sea Lion", still preserved, for example, in the English language [In Spanish language is called "Lobo marino de un pelo" (One-hair marine wolf)].
The Beaver
One of the peculiarities of the mammalian fauna of inland waters is the fact that the most conspicuous of its representatives, the beaver (Castor Canadensis Fiber, Castoridae), was introduced a few decades ago into the island.
Fuegian red fox
The red fox (Dusicyon Culpaeus lycoides, family Canidae), is larger than the gray fox and the european red fox. Its continental distribution covers Andes Mountain Range, from Ecuador to Tierra del Fuego. Only here is found at sea level.
Inland waters of Tierra del Fuego
In this environment we consider the lakes, ponds, rivers, streams and temporary waterways, abundant over the entire area of the Island. They are, for the most part, freshwater bodies; although there are some brackish lagoons in north of the island (The Flamingos, Filaret).
Magellanic forest
It occupies the southern mountainous portion of the island, on the foothills of the Andes, wich in Tierra del Fuego changes its direction from the Continent, and runs from west to east, parallel to the coast of the Beagle Channel, emerging again in Staten Island.
The guanaco: the resident of the steppe
The guanaco is one of the most striking mammals and more representative of the fauna of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. His relationship with the man on the island dates back to prehistoric times, since the guanaco is involved in many aspects of culture Selknam.
The Fuegian steppe
The Fuegian steppe occupies the north of the island extending towards the south to latitude of Viamonte farm. This is a softly undulating area, tree-free. It's dry and windy region of Tierra del Fuego, and ecological character is the most similar to continental extra Andean Patagonia.
The Condor - Vultur gryphus (familia Cathartidae)
It is a widely spread bird, along the Andes in South America. In Tierra del Fuego is possible find it from the 500 meters. It feeds on carrion, mainly dead animals. It is not endowed with attributes to attack their prey.
Seabirds: Magellanic Penguin
The Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus), is one of the birds that visit each year Patagonian and Fuegian shores, with the purpose of nesting and raising their young in cavities that open themselves in the suitable areas for the purpose.
